Day 61 – km 1514.5 to Makahika OPC

December 18, 2016

km traveled today: 23

total TA km: 1538

Started the morning at our off track campsite close to the river. Pretty basic day, just needed to get to our resupply and home at the Makahikka Outdoor Pursuit Center, where we would be housed and driven to the New World in Levin by our host, Sally.

Only 23 kilometers travelled today, mostly through nice track without any severe up -and downs, though it did occasionally get rather muddy. We had lunch in between one of our many small stream crossings, and finished out the second half of our day with just five km to go to Sally’s, two of which were on road.

Once we arrived we met our old Scottish friend, Shaun, who was staying here as well. Wonderful facilities, great showers, and free laundry. Sally drove us to our resupply at the New World in Levin and back, and we returned to find our three German friends would also be staying here.

Great dinner of plenty of pasta, fattening up before the Tararuas. We watched The Force Awakens in the bunkhouse kitchen while we ate. Super excited for the mountains!
